Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Okay, back to me.
Abortions are legal in these United States of America.
Full stop.
I am so incredibly sick and, yes, tired of all these nimrods who are trying to take us back to the Middle Ages, or worse.
Dear lord, people, this is the year Two Thousand Twelve! The Twenty First Century!
You cannot go back to the "good old days"! Nor should you want to.
I'm even more enraged because I can't vote, so I can't help fight these morons.
I can, however, donate to those who can fight. And I have.

Now I need to figure out how to help the Occupy L.A. and Occupy Wall Street people...

Just a heads-up for those of you who are on FurryMuck.
Due to some Internet routing weirdness, I am unable to log on to FM.
It started on Sunday and it continues.
Some time was spent on the phone with Endy bajr buddy who knows stuff, and it seems that my route to FM has a traffic accident in it somewhere. The data gets to FM but it doesn't come back.
I've reset my cable modem and my router and that didn't help.
If the problem persists, I will have to contact my 'Net provider and talk to a Tier 3 tech.
I was planning to be on FM less anyway, but I'd like to be in control, thankyouverymuch.

More later...

Snapped at the local Target store recently...

WTF, mate?

Seriously, what the hell is "Graves Cleaning"?
Google failed to enlighten me.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

As pointed out by [livejournal.com profile] selenesue and [livejournal.com profile] dcotelessa over on Facespace.
The amazing marriage of Bollywood lushness and high-tech superhero robot highjinks.
It's too much to hope that this will be released in the US, maybe in art house theaters.

(Actual post about what the heck I have been up to coming soon...)

I kept looking for some kind of disclaimer like "This is a parody website" but I couldn't find any.
So I guess this is for real:

Tim James wants to be governor of Alabama. In this ad, he outlines one of the things he would do if elected governor.
As far as I know, this is 100% legit and a real political TV ad.
And it's awesome timing if you ask me! :D

Welcome to Wackyland!!! XD

The unholy alliance of Hasbro and Toys'R'Us have produced yet another hellspawn that will forever haunt us!
Unless you like pink stuff.

And it costs $14.99, just like the Pink Magic 8-Ball from last time.

So, back on April 1st, I posted about the bewildering array of pinkified boardgames one could find at WeBeToys'N'Sheeeet.

"Pink, purple and green pieces inspire creative imaginations!"

I guess OTHER COLORS are confusing to girls!!
And yes, this is another TRU exclusive, just like the other pink crap.
I'm gonna go play with my non-pink Legos now...

EDIT: Just so we're clear, I don't actually have much of a problem with pink stuff.
I'm doing this purely for fun and mock outrage, and nothing more.
Lego has a pink theme called Belville and I don't rail against it.
Purple and green are fine colors and the Drazi think they're good enough to base a government on. :D
Heck, my Rubik's Snake (recently renamed Rubik's Twist) is purple and green, and I love it!
That said, I do find a couple of pink things objectionable, like for example the pinkified Game Of Life.
Now, I seem to remember the Game Of Life being a family game, meaning for the whole family.
Is there something wrong with it now that means making a special version of Life just for girls?
That just seems weird to me.
But hey, it's not important.
More pressing matters await our attention.

Power's back!
As of 21:57 PDT, power was restored to my neighborhood.
The power outage lasted from 19:47 to 21:57, so exactly 2 hours and 10 minutes.

I tell you what, I was bored outta my mind. I read Car & Driver magazine in the waning daylight.
And when it got too dark, I went and sat in the F(n)ord (St)Ranger to listen to news radio.
That's how I found out what happened: blown transformer near the 405 freeway.
But now, it's all fixed. Civilization has been restored.

zrath: Zrath-Smiley as a TRON program (OMGWTF)

Oh look, another F(n)ord (St)Ranger and...

I've been laid off! Woo hoo!
4 other people have also been laid off.
This was part of a measure to "reduce headcount" and I may be rehired in a month or two.
Things being what they are, I will be looking for another job anyway.
This downtime will allow me to clean up the apartment and deal with the rest of Pascal's stuff.
And to reconfigure the apartment's furnishing to a more Zrath-centric paradigm. :)
And to empty out the kitchen to hunt down those $#@%^%#$& 3-inch black roaches I have!
I swear, the damned things are three inches long! And they have wings!
I've killed 4 or 5 over the course of a year, but there's one right now that tasks me.
He tasks me, he tasks ME! And I shall have him!!

Anyway, yeah, we were laid off right before noon. I packed all my stuff while the surviving staff had a
lengthy meeting, then a large group of us and survivors went to lunch together to Bourbon Street Shrimp.
It's a sports bar masquerading as a cajun restaurant. It's not that cajun because I didn't see catfish or
gator tails on the menu. I had a slightly watery shrimp jambalaya, and the shrimps were really tasty.
Cool Manager paid for mine and another laid-offee's lunch, showing once again how cool he is.
We're all gonna keep in touch and pass on any tips we find.
I kinda wish this would have been done on Friday, but, oh well...
C'est la vie.

As you can see, I'm taking this rather well. I figure there's no point in flipping out.
Things will work out. Faith manages. And so on.
I did buy a SuperLotto ticket though, just in case. :D
Big money! Big prizes! I love it!

zrath: Zrath-Smiley as a TRON program (Buh?!?)

So I stopped by a Vons (aka Safeway outside of L.A.) during lunch today to get some delicious Simply Lemonade
(OMGYUMMY) and a sandwich. I like sandwiches. I looked at the menu and picked something called a "Big Easy".
It's got black forest ham, salame, provolone, olives, mayo, lettuce and tomatoes.
I told the employee to hold the olives, since I despise them in all their forms.
She looked at her cheat sheet to see what was on the sandwich, then asked me what bread I wanted.
I picked some roll with cheese baked on top of it. She prepped the roll then looked at her cheat sheet again.
She spread the mayo, then placed the ham, then noticed she was out of salame. She went off to slice some.
Now, she walked all the way to the other end of the deli counter, so I didn't see what she was doing.
I waited, looking at the other sandwiches on the big sign...
The employee returned and arranged the freshly sliced coldcut on the sandwich.
It was roast beef.
I'm not even kidding!
She had very carefully sliced the required amount of roast beef instead of salame.
At this point, I said nothing. She was already confused enough as it is, constantly looking at both her cheat sheet
and the little menu booklet us customers used to choose a sandwich. I really didn't want her brain to short-circuit.
She finished up the sammich, bagged it, tagged it, gave it to me. I paid for it and the lemonade and left.
The sandwich was delicious, by the way.
Oy gevalt...

As seen in the cheese section of my local Trader Joe's:

"New shape! Perfect for crackers or on its own!"

On n'arrète pas le progrés...

(Literal: "One can't stop progress." - Contextual: "What will they think of next?")

And now, from the Everybody Point And Laugh department:

Sci-Fi Channel changes name to something stupid and confirms they never liked science fiction anyway!

In related news, io9.com gives us "25 Other Names The Sci Fi Channel Could Rebrand With"

Oy gevalt...

Edit: "25 Other Names" link fixed!
Those responsible have been sacked.

zrath: Zrath-Smiley as a TRON program (Boo!)

Yes, it's Ouija Board For Girls!
You know it's for girls because it's PINK!!!
The text above the word "Ouija" says "Ask The Questions Girls Want To Know".
On the bottom right, it says "Now With Question Cards! 72 Fun Things To Ask!"
This thing is made by Parker Brothers and is a Toys'R'Us exclusive.
For ages 8 and up.

Just the perfect gift for the little witch in your life! :D

zrath: Zrath-Smiley as a TRON program (Ghost Rider)

So, like, John McCain is gonna be campaigning at Burning Man this year.
So that means new security measures for the Playa.

Man, just what the Burn needed.
I mean, Obama I could see doing that. But McCain? No way!
