At times like this there's nothing really to say other than I'll keep you in my prayers and that you need to take a sigh of relief that everything he has been going through is done. It will hurt most, now, for you. But a wound to the heart always hurts most before the healing can begin, and to keep in mind that as your friends we're here to be a bandaid for your heart so you don't keep that wound open. He is free, and he doesn't want you to be chained by grief. Your true friends will be there when you need someone with a shoulder to rest your head on and always keep in mind that while a lot of us are very far away we all are a lot closer than you might think.
