Ah geeze louise, it's Thursday and I have yet to post about what I did last weekend.
Awright pilgrims, hike up your shorts and sing like the Duke!!

Fri Aug 27 (The Day Of Departure)
In which our hero juggles both his day job and trying to get his sibling off to Burning Man.

As some of you might know, going to Burning Man isn't quite like going to Dizzyland.
You need far more than just a camera, sunscreen, good shoes and CASH, like you would at The Tragic Kingdom.
You need GEAR, and lots of it. There's nothing there, except what you and the other weirdos bring.
Thankfully, the group my brother is travelling with has the GEAR. But DJ Pascal still needs to get all
his crap in order and part of that is my responsibility. I'm the guy who burns his CDs and preps all
his compilations. Most of my evenings that past week had been occupied with such preparations.
Well, Friday was the Day Of Departure, where members of the PPP Tribe would swoop down and grab my brother
and his gear and take him back to the Hollywood House, and from there to Burning Man.
But we had to coordinate a pick-up first, an evac if you will.
And it had to be done from my work, 'cause that's where a working phone is.
So, after some phone tag, an evac team was sent off and the sibling was plucked from the gaping maw of Sony.
Or some crap...
And there was much rejoicing.
And the rest of the day passed, as it must.
I hit Trader Joe's after work and stocked up on food for the weekend and the upcoming week.
And then I went home, blablabla...

Saturday (The Day Of Heroism)
In which our hero gets nicked by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and growls a lot.

Okay, so it's 9am and I'm in bed, minding my own business, when the phone rings.
It's da brother, who seems convinced that it's actually 1pm. Huh? You callin' from New York or something?
He wants more promo CDs to take with him. And he says some lady e-mailed him about wanting to talk to me.
How bizarre. After being informed that the time was actually 9:20am and NOT 4 hours later, I went back
to sleep for a bit. I gave up at around 11am, got showered and dressed, and went to Best Buy to buy blank CDs.
I only had time to burn a couple of CDs before DJ Pascal showed up to collect them.
He gave me some final instructions about e-mails and the website then he was off to Burning Man for good.

In the meantime, I had called the lady who had e-mailed him. She needed a brochure designed ASAP to send off
to New York by Monday Evening. She had seen the promotional e-mail I had sent out to our mailing list,
and figured I could do the job for her. I listened to her and told her I would call her back.
I didn't know how much to charge, and I didn't know how involved the job was.
A couple of friends were called to be consulted on possible amounts of remuneration for the job.
I then called the lady back and set up a rendez-vous so we could go over the material and I could get an idea
of what the job would entail. We agreed on 5pm and picked the Egyptian's as a meeting place.
Meanwhile, I was trying to arrange an evening outing with Warren, Gizmo, and possibly Spino and Sweetie.
I got ahold of Sweetie and she told me that meeting them tonight would be difficult, Spino was overworking.
I called Warren back and gave him the news, and also told him I would call him back right after my meeting.
Which went pretty well. We hashed out all the details, she gave me all the stuff I needed, and a price was
agreed upon. I was to design an 8-page brochure showing off her Spring 2005 collection of fancy tanktops.

It was nearly 7pm by then, so I called Warren and told him to come on over!
He showed up with Gizmo in tow. We tried Spino one final time, no dice, then we went to see "Hero".
It was a 90-minute movie, but it felt like 2 hours. It was very pretty to look at and very deep. And oh so Chinese.
Apparently, calligraphy is linked to swordsmanship. I did not know that. And the Chinese invented carpet-bombing,
using lots of archers and ballistas and shitloads of arrows instead of tons of B-52s and iron bombs.
Did I like it? Well, yeah. I can take that stuff in small doses. The wire-fu gets old pretty wuick with me.

A couple of interesting trailers were shown: "The Aviator" (same trailer as on Apple.com/trailers),
a Martin Scorcese film that focuses on the young Howard Hughes (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) in the Pre-WWII era.
It's probably gonna kick ass and will have some crossover appeal for "The Rocketeer" fans (like me!!).
Also, "Ghost In The Shell: Innocence", which releases in theaters on September 17th.
Yes, that's the same day as "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow".
Hopefully, GITS2 will play in "real" theaters, no just creaky old arthouses (with tiny seats not made for Kzins).
GITS2 seems to be all about Batou, Major Kusanagi's trusted colleague. The Major herself doesn't seem to appear.

We got out of the theater at 11pm and wondered where to eat. We reached Tito's Tacos, a local phenomenon, just
as it was about to close. Tito's Tacos is kinda like Pink's Hot Dogs in Hollywood: there's always huge lines.
The reason for that is damn tasy food. Tito's serves Mexican food of the inland variety (as opposed to the Baja
variety of super-fresh, charbroiled Baja Fresh/Poquito Mas fast-food places). No fish taco here!
Just good old-fashioned tacos and burritos and enchiladas. Everything is boxed up to go.
After this tasty interlude, it was time to go. They drop me home and headed back to the Valley.
And I probably went to bed after a couple of rounds of Need For Speed: Underground.

Sunday (The Day Of Labor, Ironically Enough)
In which our hero spends most of the day working on that freelance project.

Woke up, got outta bed, ran a comb across mah head... (from some Beatles song)

Took care of a few little things, then started work on the brochure.
I spent about 6 hours on it, plus extra time for food, breaks, and interruptions.
I managed to do 2 loads of laundry during this, so I was pretty productive.
I sent the client some sample pages by e-mail and she liked 'em. We only changed one thing.
She came by in the evening to pick up a CD-R with the pages on it and paid me cash. Woo hoo!!
I could use a few more little jobs like this!

And that's about it, really. It was a kind of quiet SUnday.

...Because, damn, I went to Ralphs (it's not just a name, it's a sound effect!!) to replace the jar of Jif creamy I had helped destroy,
and I wound up paying $4.99 for the same size jar (28oz) of the same exact peanut butter (the aforementioned Jif creamy).

I mean, daaaaaaang!
I can get 2 jars of very good fruit preserves at Trader Joe's for that much!
Since I've never really bought peanut butter, I didn't know how much it cost.

So yesterday, I'm walking home, and I'm approaching a Smart & Final (which is kinda like the Mini-Me version of Costco)
and I'm suddenly seized with an inexplicable craving for canned raviolis. The crappy meat kind with the too-sweet sauce.
Aaaargh!!!
I tried to resist but it was no use. I went into Smarty-Pants and cast about for crappy raviolis. I found them easily.

I also found something very interesting: a 4lbs jar of Skippy creamy peanut butter.
Wow, 4 pounds! That's, like, 64oz!! It's HUGE!! How much could it be?

$6.19!??!?!

Jesus crispies!! That's only $1.20 more than that tiny 28oz jar I bought at Rolfs!
I REALLY hate them now!!

(Builds an EMP device and plants it in the nearest Ralphs)
