Warren came over on X-Mas eve and brought a movie with him.

The Brothers Grimm - Sacrébleu! Terry Gilliam takes on the Frenchies again! And fairy tales too!
Okay, so you've got Napoleon tear-assing into Germany and capturing cities left and right. Meanwhile, the Grimm
Brothers have a good little scam going where they pretend to be Ghostbusters and bust fake ghosts and witches.
Jakob Grimm (Heath Ledger) is the romantic one who wants to believe some of this stuff is real. Wilhelm Grimm
(Matt Damon) is the practical one who usually gets the girl. He's also the older brother and constantly slapping
Jakob back in line. Boy, does that remind me of my brother and I!
The boys wear shiny, goofy armor that really doesn't do much, and wacky gadgets a la "Sleepy Hollow".
The Grimms get captured by the French, and General Delatombe (Jonathan Pryce, a Gilliam veteran) sends them off
to check out a REALLY haunted/enchanted forest where several girls from a nearby village have disappeared into.
They're saddled with Cavaldi, a delirious Italian torture expert (played with great relish by Peter Stormare, who
so impressed me as Satan in "Constantine") and some French troops. Spooky highjinks ensue!
One of the fun aspects of the movie is spotting all the different fairy tale references packed into it.
It's a fun film, though some of the effect shots look like crap. You can clearly see a difference in lighting
between the area where the actors are and where the effects are taking place. It's kinda like the weird black
spots in the original unretouched versions of the original Star Wars movies. I think it's the clarity of the
digital transfer that brings this out, but I don't know why it wasn't cleaned up.
Anyway, it's not as "Gilliam-y" as Terry's other films. It seems more, I don't know, mainstream?
Guess you can't be a genius all the time. A commendable effort nonetheless, quite worth a look.
