When people refer to "spiral" in this way, they're referring to either the spiral of water going down a drain, or the spiral of a stalled airplane falling toward the ground - either way, things are going badly. "Gyrate", on the other hand... bah. Someone tried to use a synonym for spiral, but gyrate doesn't have the same context, so the substitution doesn't work.
