Has changing a show to make it more commercial ever worked? (Even STAR TREK MOVIE, despite near-universal adoration, ended up making slightly less than STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE...)

The Bad Astronomer liked 1999 because when people asked Dr Bergman "What the hell is THAT?" he would say "I don't know, we'll have to find out," which is what science is all about.
