Well... the first TRON seemed to feed off of a Spartacus storyline mixed with the one human playing a 'Jesus' figure -- IOWs, Disney didn't have their own material, they just reinvented old material. This has been Disney's biggest strength and weakness since I can remember.
When Disney does a sequel, THEN they have to reach into their own pool of ideas, and reveal they are lacking. It's only when Disney contracts outside help (Lilo & Stitch / Pixar originals) that they do better.
My hope is that Daft's induction in this process hints that they went to outside help for other items, such as plot and design. I like the designs I've seen, but the plot is still hidden (at least, I hope the commercials didn't reveal all the plot there is).
