Friday the 17th
Coworker James comes through and delivers "Burnout 3" for PS2 at a reduced price (special EA connection)! W00T!!
I've not played the first two games, but I had read the reviews, and I tried number 3 at E3 not too long ago.

It's a racing game where you get boost for taking risks. The more you break the traffic laws, the more boost you get!
You can rub against other cars, slam into 'em, make 'em spin out and crash, and the brand new feature, "Aftertouch",
lets you guide your wreck after you've crashed so you can potentially take out an opponent, and/or do more damage.
Anarchy!! Yeeeeaaaa!! (headbangs)

The career mode has two styles of events: Race and Crash.
Race is racing, pretty much, and there are 5 types of events within:
1) race (lap racing against 5 opponents),
2) challenge (point-to-point race against 1 opponent),
3) time trial (reach the finish line before time runs out),
4) carnage (or something, take out as many opponents as possible before timer ends),
5) Grand Prix (multiple races against 5 opponents, with points tallied up),
Crash is different.
You have to smack your car into traffic and cause as much damage as possible.
You also have to hit some tokens to get more points (x2, x4, gold, silver, bronze, detonation, etc...).
The dollar value of the damage you cause is tallied up and you get a medal, plus points, and new cars are
unlocked when you reach certain dollar amounts.
None of the cars are licensed, because they get rightly fucked up in crashes!
Caved-in hoods, detachable wheels, broken glass, twisted chassis, flying shrapnel everywhere, it's glorious!!
After playing "Need For Speed: Underground", where all the cars are licensed and show no damage at all because of it,
it's nice to play a game where the cars can get really, severely, drastically trashed and thrashed.

After work, Pascal and I went to the nearby theater to see "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow".
Holy throwback to the '30s, Batman!
The beginning of the movie made my eyes water, probably because everything was so blurry and foggy
and cottony. After a while, picture became sharper (or maybe I just got used to it) and everything was fine.
The movie was a complete retro-geek wet dream: zeppelins, rayguns, robots, rockets, wacky airplanes, tesla coils, etc...
Angelina Jolie's lips were still as big as ever. Jude Law was fine, as always. Whatshername was adequate.
And there was this guy who looked a lot like Judd Nelson but wasn't.
Oh yeah, and the new Professor Dumbledore was in it too (Michael Gambon).
All the scientists were German, as they should be, and the PA system was in the correct 3 languages:
German, French, and English. There were many, many, many touches here and there that referenced the
comicbooks and serials of the '30s, and possibly the '40s, but mostly the '30s.
The script was a bit flat, possibly in an attempt to be accurate, I don't know.

All in all, it's definitely worth seeing on the big screen!

Next post: Saturday!
(Provided LJ is working correctly, and doesn't give me some "invalid month value" error)
