So, when exactly did "melancholy" become an adjective?

I mean, as far as I've always known, it was a noun.
And "melancholic" was the adjective.

Of course, I could be wrong.
Just because it's "melancholie" and "melancholique" in French doesn't mean it works the same in English.

But dammit, I'm pretty sure "melancholy" is a noun! Not an adjective!
