Could be fun. Could be abso-frelling-lutely horrid. I just wish the "Buzz Bunny" character had a light-saber like thing that sprang from a robo-carrot.
This is a bad idea. Remember the legal headaches when they tried to change Superman's costume? The licensees are going to rebel when they try to change the iconic characters and that will be that.
The only thing that will save this show is superior scriptwriting and I'm not sanguine about those chances. Druther see more Tiny Toons or Animaniacs really.
Erg. Tricky to say. Part of the thing that makes the original WB characters work is their... familiarity, we know the personalities, catch-phrases, habits. That's what makes their stories fun, when we see how they'll pull their schtick in new situations.
This cartoon looks like it's seriously re-defining the characters (and voices). A bit similar to anime series where they'll just scoop up old characters and thrust them into a new cartoon with little or no continuity. It could work. It could bomb. It's just that the superhero Bugs wouldn't be the same as the classic Bugs, is all. (Except by name and whatever gags they decide to keep.)
The other thing I wonder about is the level of cartoon reality... will these guys be obeying superhero laws of physics (Justice League, etc.), or toon laws of physics, dropping anvils and things out of nowhere? If the former, then there's not much left to distinguish these guys from their original counterparts, which might mean the studio is hoping to draw on their notoriety as the main selling point.
There is quite immense potential for suckage, I fear. They're being careful to note these aren't (supposedly) the Warner characters, but distant descendants; but will the writing be enough to suppose them?
I'm with selenesue - I'd far sooner see more TTA or Animaniacs. (And while we're at it, maybe releasing them on DVD wouldn't be such a bad idea.. but then, Warner marketing has long sucked mightily, whether in not promoting Cats Don't Dance, bothering with Quest for Camelot, or plopping the same five pieces of stock character artwork on anything possible and foisting it off as "merchandise")
Ok, so they're trying to take the old characters and update them. Nothing new there, Marvel's done that in the past with their various future history spinoffs. The question is, what is the quality of the show going to be like?
Animation is probably going to be the usual expected standards for KidsWB/Cartoon Network. Which means a kind of 'eh' level. Characterizations and scripts? That's where we're on unknown territory. If they hire folks who've worked previously on some of the earlier stuff, it could be quite subversive in nature. Or it could be the typical idiotic levels we've seen recently (read Duck Dodgers, save the Green Lantern parody). Remember that a lot of the kids (the audience) aren't familiar with the Warner Bros. family of characters the way we are. Tiny Toons and Animaniacs is a generation ago (in terms of television audiences).
