So the TV is on right now and tuned to IFC.
They're showing "Killing Zoe", a movie that's in English and French.
One of the criminals is telling a joke in French and the English subtitles are wrong.
The joke is about a guy who just got out of jail after serving 10 years hard labor.
He has only one thing in mind: to perform cunnilingus. (Or, to be vulgar: eat pussy)
But the subtitles translate this as "licking bellybuttons".
Every. Single. time.

Damn! You Americans are such flippin' prudes!!! :D

Just kidding...
Mostly.
I mean, this movie was originally rated NC-17.
And apparently recut to an R rating.
This isn't exactly "Bambi"...

Whatever...

How else do you tink they got away with the Japanese word for, well, merde(sp?), lol, in a TMNT movie? XD But yes, the US are afraid that such things will "corrupt" their "innocents", even if the audience is aware, if not of the French language, then of similar references in English. it can sometimes boggle even my mind, at this point, though I'm inured to the stupidity of it. It has improved slightly in the translations recently, but still (and overall), I have found fan subs superior to the professionally-done ones, in that respect. And yes, that's innocence like in the nounb thing, and not in the state of insanity thing.

That's so wonderfully inane. And then the executives are puzzled why audiences are in decline.. I'm surprised the NAB hasn't blamed OMG TEH PIRACY - that's worked out so well for the MPAA and RIAA, after all.

Another US broadcasting practice I've never understood is the dubbing of shows already in English, so as not to cause people's heads to explode by hearing an accent from outside North America. Did Roobarb really need dubbing? Why was the recent Magic Roundabout movie given a completely new cast who've themselves never even heard of the show?

But if we knew the answers to that, we still wouldn't understand why Texas hasn't taken Bush Jr out into the brush and shot him for the good of the nation and the world.

*snort* It's not the prudishness in this case; it's the CASH. As an NC-17 movie, it might sell a few tens of thousands. As an R-rated flick, it'll score hundreds of thousands at least, given any kind of real national distribution.

As for why we haven't shot Bush Jr yet, that's simply because he hasn't committed any crimes, Porsy. Clinton was worse --- close to 100 American citizens died on his watch as a direct result of federal agencies violating the law, and he DEFENDED those acts. The courts did not. Should we have dragged out and shot Clinton?
