Today's lunch destination is Carl's Jr.
I was in the mood for a big-ass burger and didn't want to drive, so I walked to the local Carls.
And holy crap, the prices have gone up! Actually, I think it's just this Carls that happens to be more expensive.
I ordered a Bacon Cheese Six-Dollar Burger with medium fries and drink and a Spicy Chicken sandwich.
At my usual Carls on Santa Monica Blvd, this would cost around $8.50 or $9.
At this Carls near work, I paid $10.25!!!
And they listed the Bacon Cheese Six-Dollar Burger as costing $5.49 by itself! It shouldn't be more than $4.75!
The Six-Dollar Burgers will eventually cost $6 for real if this keeps up.
Anyway, the food was tasty, but the steep prices make me reconsider going back.
That's a heck of a price difference.

In France, we didn't have Spam(tm), we had "corned beef" in cans.
I was flummoxed and flabbergasted to discover upon my arrival in Los Angeles that you could get FRESH SLICED corned beef at the local deli! And that it was DELICIOUS!
My dad and I used to go to Farmer's Market (next to CBS Television City) regularly to eat corned beef sandwiches.
I think I told that story when we went to Canter's with your parental units and I ordered the corned beef.
Man, that stuff is even better than pastrami!

I have tasted Spam(tm) but I don't like it. I doubt I will eat it ever again.

I'll forgive the horse thing, because you are French. See? That comes in handy occasionally.

"Louche" is the procedure of dripping drops of absinthe over the sugar cube and adding water to make it pearlescent. It's part of the ritual. You will probably not go near this on account of the alcohol.

Funnily enough, a South African on my friendslist complained about this being an excessively American list on account of the USAn branded foods like McDonald's and Krispy Kreme. But most Americans don't get "Clotted Cream Tea" at all. That's not a dish, that's a meal, with tea and scones with clotted cream. OMG good but you might as well just inject in my arteries and get it over with. Sigh.

I have been forgiven! Yea! :D

Ah, okay, I didn't know the procedure was called "louche".
"Louche" means either "ladle" or "being cross-eyed" or "suspicious".
So imagine my confusion.
I have had Pastis, which is Absinthe Lite and popular in Southern France.
It's yellowish clear and turns milky white when mixed with water and ice cubes.

US-centric? Mon derrière! That list is so Western Euro, it's not funny!
Apparently, UK market chain Tesco is overflowing with Krispy Kremes!
I tried KKs a couple of times but they're way too sweet and have too much frosting.
I dig buttermilk bars and old-fashioneds anyway.

I think much of the charm of Krispy Kreme is the childhood memories. Jim, for example was thrilled when they brought the chain to L.A. I swapped laundry duty with him to sit on line at the KK drive through, which that first weekend was an hour long. I got to read a book and relax while he did laundry, but he got his childhood memory brought to life. Fair trade.

The KK where this took place has been replaced by a Mexican chicken joint, which may indicate that there was not so much of a market here as previously thought. Shrug.

I might try this when I'mmore awake (bed straight afgter! 3:36 AM here!)

35. I like root beer floats. Grew up drinking them. Root beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it. I also like McDonald's original Shamrock Shake (St Patrick's day special, vanilla ice cream with green food coloring: I just liked the thought of a green milkshake, lol). In a similar vein was Howard Johnson's orange sherbet cooler, which was an orange sherbet shake with a scoop of lime sherbet in it. One drink I really had to get used to though, and only had it in Massachusetts, was a lime rickey. I'm still not sure to this day what goes into one of those.

One I had to get used to, but though the idea was strange at first, they turned out pretty good? Hot, soft pretzels with msutard.

Spam is really good when baked with chives and a bit of brown sugar (not much, just a pinch for flavor). Otherwise, no spam for me. GMail will, though, post spam recipes on occasion.

The first (and the last!) time I had a S'More was at sleepaway summer camp in 1972. Graham crackers with a bit of chocolate and toasted marshmallow made as a sandwich thing. It made me sick to my stomach. Go figure, since I like chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows.

Speaking of marshmallows, I liked the ones best that were burnt on the outside because they wre all gooey and sweet on the inside.

I'll also forgive you for eating Horse, given your heritage... However, a Frenchman who doesn't drink wine?!?!?! Personally, I can't drink the stuff, or any kind of alcohol. Just makes me very ill...
