So I stopped by a Vons (aka Safeway outside of L.A.) during lunch today to get some delicious Simply Lemonade
(OMGYUMMY) and a sandwich. I like sandwiches. I looked at the menu and picked something called a "Big Easy".
It's got black forest ham, salame, provolone, olives, mayo, lettuce and tomatoes.
I told the employee to hold the olives, since I despise them in all their forms.
She looked at her cheat sheet to see what was on the sandwich, then asked me what bread I wanted.
I picked some roll with cheese baked on top of it. She prepped the roll then looked at her cheat sheet again.
She spread the mayo, then placed the ham, then noticed she was out of salame. She went off to slice some.
Now, she walked all the way to the other end of the deli counter, so I didn't see what she was doing.
I waited, looking at the other sandwiches on the big sign...
The employee returned and arranged the freshly sliced coldcut on the sandwich.
It was roast beef.
I'm not even kidding!
She had very carefully sliced the required amount of roast beef instead of salame.
At this point, I said nothing. She was already confused enough as it is, constantly looking at both her cheat sheet
and the little menu booklet us customers used to choose a sandwich. I really didn't want her brain to short-circuit.
She finished up the sammich, bagged it, tagged it, gave it to me. I paid for it and the lemonade and left.
The sandwich was delicious, by the way.
Oy gevalt...

I would have told her.

That's the only way to learn!

Places like that don't require you to know anything about anything. And they don't pay anyone enough to bother to properly teach them. So they just learn who's who and what's that as they go along.

The Lumberjack

(Sorry about the BigMac icon, it's the only food-related icon I have, other than a double-cheeseburger!)

I don't know what the in-store deli is like down there, but the Safeway stores up here have a monster that they call "The Lumberjack" This beastie is made on a whole french-loaf, then loaded up with all kinds of various cold-cuts: Salami, Balogna, Ham, Roast Beef, Pepperoni, then they add cheese(s), mayo, mustard, tomatoes, onions, lettuce... The thing weighs well over three pounds! Cost? $8.99

I bought a full-sized one once, and quickly learned that even I can't finish it off in one sitting. This thing is best shared if you must buy a full-sized one, but thankfully most of the stores also have half-sizes available. Even one of those take a little effort to polish off, but at least you know you won't be hungry again half-an-hour later! :)

Oh yeah, we have those. They call 'em "Monster Sandwiches".
I've bought a few in my time, usually to share with someone else. Or to eat myself over the course of 3 meals. :)

Funny you should mention this. These sandwiches are really good. Ever since the Safeways got these sandwich bars and panini machines, I haven't looked at any of the sub shops. These're usually better tasting and cheaper. Plus I keep getting free sandwiches every couple weeks or so with the buy 7 get one free.

Yeah, I've been so disatisfied with sandwich places like Quiznos (overpriced), Togos (made me sick twice in a row) and Subway (made me sick too, but not as bad as Togos) that I find myself going to supermarkets to get sandwiches instead.
I tried a local pizza/pasta joint that was recommended on Yelp.com and it was complete bullshit. I ordered an 18" club sub and when I unwrapped it at home, I discovered that it contained the amount of coldcuts you would normally find on a 6" sub. I mean, the stuff was spread so thin, it was ridiculous! And a complete rip-off! So much for supporting local independent businesses. I felt like a fleeced tourist.
Anyway, The local Ralphs (aka Krogers) has a turkey and cheddar sub that's pretty good. I mean, it's just mayo, lettuce, turkey breast and sliced cheddar on sub-style roll, but it's good! The bread could be better, but the sammich weighs easily a pound and the turkey and cheddar are high quality. This sub costs $6.
Ralphs also has big thick sammiches in focaccia bread. The turkey club is pretty good, with turkey, bacon, avocado and other stuff. It's $7 and it's a bit of an ordeal to eat because it's so tall. But I have a big mouth! :D
Yeah, so screw the chain sammich shops!

I've had the same problem with Wendy's... I don't bother asking for anything with or without anything other than the standard. Poor kid was probably new.
Ever have spaghetti sandwiches? Beats a meatball sub hands down.

Dude, a spaghetti sandwich is an insane concept, nutritionally-speaking.
Pasta IS bread! It's the same thing! It's like eating a bread sandwich!
There's an old French joke that goes:
"I'm on a diet now. I no longer eat bread with my pasta."
Sheesh...

Nah nah nah, it's not quite that simple. I put a little bit of noodle in it but mostly it's an Italian sausage with a side order of extra marinara with some dill and brown sugar mixed in, extra onions, and extra bell peppers. Put it in a hotdog bun and melt some mozerella and boomo.
It could also be considered a possible Italian Sloppy Joe.

Oy indeed.

I'd've said something, probably. Mostly because I like getting what I actually order. o.o;

That being said, there is a Wendy's near a friend of mine, where I used to stop and get food when visiting, before I realized that they have a 100% failure rate at correct order fulfillment. Even when everything was right off the menu, no special orders. Fail.
