Much of the reason you don't have the kinds of celebrations and parades for the 4th of July has been changing attitudes over the past 60 years. Back in the 1950's, it wouldn't be uncommon to see some kind of parade in small towns and larger communities. We were just out of World War II and Korea, the disappointments over Vietnam hadn't taken root yet, and there was a sense of civic pride at being an American back then. Today, well, it's sales at the mall, the annual fireworks display and perhaps some civic concerts in the small towns, but nothing like what it used to be back then.
